The Apni Chhat Apna Ghar initiative, launched under the leadership of the Chief Minister Punjab, is a groundbreaking scheme that plans to deliver around 100,000 affordable houses and apartments across various areas of the province within four and a half years. As someone familiar with Punjab’s housing sector, I see this program as a lifeline for low-income segments of society who currently live in rented buildings or informal settings. This initiative will facilitate these eligible residents in securing their own houses, providing not just shelter but dignity. With 03 different execution models, the Punjab Housing & Town Planning Agency has been appointed as the executing agency, while the Housing, Urban Development, and Public Health Engineering Department (HUD&PHED) serve as the administrative department, ensuring smooth implementation of this impactful program.

Future Benefits of ACAG Program:”

The Apni Chhat Apna Ghar program is not just about building 100,000 homes — it’s about changing lives by creating improved living conditions for low-income families. From my perspective working in housing outreach, I’ve seen how reduced overcrowding and the shift away from slum dwelling can restore dignity and health. By providing enhanced access to basic amenities like water, sanitation, and electricity, the program fosters increased community safety and security. There’s a clear and positive social impact on target beneficiaries, helping build stronger communities. Beyond that, it has strengthened social cohesion and driven community development, while the construction efforts alone are expected to generate approximately half a million jobs and contribute to the economy, both directly and indirectly.

First Phase and District Included in Phase One

In the first phase of the Apni Chhat Apna Ghar scheme, the provincial government has decided to provide 1,892 free plots spread across 23 housing schemes in 19 districts, including Attock, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Bhakkar, Chiniot, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Jhang, Jhelum, Kasur, Khushab, Layyah, Lodhran, Mandi Bahauddin, Okara, Rajanpur, Sahiwal, Sargodha, and Vehari. Having worked with community development teams in rural Punjab, I can attest to the significance of such land allocations. While further phases are expected to expand coverage to all districts of Punjab, the overarching goal is to construct 100,000 houses in 4.5 years, directly benefitting poor and middle-income families who struggle to access formal housing.

Key Features of Apni Zameen Apna Ghar

The Apni Zameen Apna Ghar initiative offers an opportunity for eligible families to own a 3-marla plot of land, providing a space to build their own home. With a transparent process and a fair balloting system, this scheme prioritizes vulnerable groups, including widows, orphans, differently-abled individuals, and labourers, ensuring inclusivity and eliminating exploitation. The interest-free, construction loans of up to Rs1.5 million can be repaid over seven years, with manageable monthly payments of Rs14,000. To make the process accessible, the application fee is set to zero, removing any financial barriers for those in need. The entire program is overseen by an eight-member, district-level committee that ensures fairness and accountability throughout. Preference is given to the most deserving candidates, making this an opportunity for families who may not have had the chance to own property before.
